Foods For Teens That Fix Common Complaints

Dry skin? Nasty cold?  These easy swaps will help more than just your comfort-food craving!

  • Flaky Skin - SKIP the Fru-fru Coffee Drink and PICK the Berry Smoothie: Cold weather can cause your skin to get all dry and blotchy, and downing caffeinated drinks dehydrates you even more.  Swap your latte for a smoothie made with skim milk (or unsweetened almond milk) and strawberries or blueberries - both fruits are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants that keep your face smooth and moisturized (kind of like drinkable lotion!).
  • Runny Nose - SKIP the Mac & Cheese and PICK the Pasta with Tomato Sauce: It might feel good to dig into a big cheesy,, melty bowl, but all that super-rich food actually makes you more susceptible to colds. (Those saturated fats are mucus forming and stress your immune system.)  Instead, go for whole wheat pasta slathered in tomato sauce, which has a massive dose of vitamin C that may bolster your defenses.
  • Zero Energy - SKIP the Bagel with Cream Cheese and PICK the Whole Grain Toast with PB and Banana: If you're sleepy by mid-morning, blame your bagel.  Its refined carbs casue your energy levels to spike...and then take a nosedive.  Replace it with whole grain toast - your body processes whole grains slower, so you won't crash.  Add peanut butter (or almond butter) and banana for a natural sugar and potassium boost!
  • Blah Mood - SKIP the Pepperoni Pizza and PICK the Turkey Chili:  That slice smells amazing, but the grease and carbs make you sluggish and bloated, which affects your mood.  But when you dive into a warm bowl of turkey chili, the lean protein actually switches on feel-good chemicals in your brain. Yay!
